What a birth chart is, and what the engine computes

A natal chart is a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born: the ecliptic positions of the Sun, Moon and planets, the Ascendant rising on the eastern horizon, the Midheaven, and the twelve houses that divide the sky from your viewpoint. An astronomy engine computes these from an ephemeris, your birth instant converted to Universal Time, and your longitude and latitude.

Because it is astronomy, two correct engines agree to the degree. The birth time matters most: the Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes and changes sign roughly every two hours, and the house cusps move with it.

Sun, Moon, Rising, and the rest

Sun sign: the ecliptic sign the Sun occupied; in tradition, identity and vitality.
Moon sign: emotional needs and habits. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so the date alone can leave it ambiguous.
Rising sign (Ascendant): the sign on the eastern horizon; how you meet the world, and the starting point for the houses.
